Leading with purpose: CEO Anne Gretland on Equal Inspired Podcast
What does it take to lead with purpose in the fast-paced world of technology? For Anne Gretland, CEO of Fotoware, the answer is simple, it begins and ends with people.
In conversation with Ellie King, host of the Equal Inspired Podcast, Anne reflects on her 25-year journey in tech and what it takes to build inclusive, high-performing teams. Together, they explore how equality, diversity, and belonging aren’t abstract ideals, they’re the very foundation of creativity, innovation, and lasting success.
In this episode, Anne shares what motivates her as a leader and how putting people first has shaped everything she’s done at Fotoware. The discussion dives into what inclusion, equality, and innovation look like when they’re lived every day.
Leadership built on people and purpose
For Anne, great leadership starts with trust. When people feel safe to speak up, dare to make mistakes, and contribute ideas, innovation follows naturally. This principle of psychological safety is embedded into Fotoware’s culture from open communication at every level, to leadership training that emphasizes empathy and accountability.

Inclusion is not treated as an initiative, but as part of how decisions are made. Fotoware’s hiring practices challenge bias and look beyond the obvious. The hiring team focuses on potential and motivation, not just hard skills and experience. Shortlists are reviewed for diversity, names are removed from applications, and every woman applying for a technical role is guaranteed an interview.
— “Diversity is not a goal but should be a way of leading. When different perspectives are valued, better ideas surface, and stronger teams are built.”
Anne and Ellie also explore how inclusion fuels innovation. When people are encouraged to ask questions and challenge routines, creativity flows. Sometimes that means changing how meetings are run, trying new ways of working, or simply listening longer before deciding.
- “I wish people would ask me more often, ‘Should we just go to Paris?’ This is a metaphor and is all about breaking patterns and trying new things. It’s when we think outside the “normal” that the real magic happens.”, Anne explains.
Anne leads by example, showing the openness and inclusiveness she expects from others. She encourages leaders to admit when they don’t have all the answers, to listen carefully, and to stay human. When people feel they belong, trust grows, and when leaders create space for everyone to thrive, innovation takes care of itself.
— “Leadership is about helping people see what they’re capable of even when they don’t see it themselves.”
Driving equality beyond Fotoware
Anne’s passion for diversity extends beyond her role at Fotoware. She is co-founder and former chair of ODA-Nettverk, the largest network for women in tech in the Nordics, now connecting more than 14,000 members and 100 partners. What started as a small community of volunteers has grown into a powerful movement for gender equality and representation in the tech industry, still run entirely on a volunteer basis by women in the Norwegian tech industry.
Her efforts have earned her widespread recognition, including being named Diversity Leader of the Year 2021 by Nordic Women in Tech and twice listed among Norway’s 50 Leading IT Women.

A message that resonates beyond tech
Anne’s story is a reminder that leadership is about purpose and courage. On the podcast, she speaks candidly about moments of self-doubt early in her career and how stepping into discomfort became her greatest teacher. Keeping in the back of her mind the famous song by Aaliyah …”if at first you don't succeed, then dust yourself off and try again”. The worst that can happen if you fail, is that you know you tried and you dared to try. That should make you proud and strong.
That message aligns perfectly with Equal IT’s mission: to challenge barriers, empower underrepresented talent, and show that the tech industry thrives when diverse perspectives are appreciated and considered.
Both Anne and Equal IT share a vision of a future where leadership and inclusion are inseparable, where technology not only drives progress but reflects the diversity of the people it serves. Inclusion isn’t a strategy, it’s the heartbeat of leadership. When leaders make space for every voice, truly listen, and act with purpose, innovation follows naturally. People and purpose together spark innovation, build stronger teams, and shape a future where everyone can succeed.
