A lot has changed at FotoWare in the past 2 years, with exciting new owners in Viking Venture, 42 amazing new hires, and 3 companies acquired. Another big change within the company has been in the development team, which has seen its own growth and expansion. We caught up with our Head of Development, Peter, to find out how the department has changed, why it’s so exciting to be part of, and what’s in store for the future.

How has the development team in FotoWare changed since you joined in 2019?

We’ve been on a really interesting journey in the last two years! As a company, we’ve been working hard to help a lot of our customers to move from their on-premise solutions, taking their experience from 25 plus years into the cloud with our more cost-effective SaaS offering. In this time, our department has almost doubled in size and we established the product team as a single department in FotoWare. Creating a separate team has meant we’ve been able to work in a more structured way.

"What we’re doing here is truly ground-breaking. It’s a great challenge for innovative and forward-thinking developers."

What does FotoWare's cloud-first approach and transition towards SaaS mean for the dev team?

It’s very exciting! We’re working in the cloud with new technology from Microsoft, which is really interesting for developers. FotoWare SaaS runs on the Microsoft Azure cloud platform and we’re a gold partner with Microsoft, so we have a good relationship and have been working closely together for a long time now. We are working on the frontline with cutting-edge technology, which means that we occasionally run into issues that haven’t been solved before - and we need to solve them! What we’re doing here is truly ground-breaking. It’s a great challenge for innovative and forward-thinking developers.

What is something you are particularly proud of the dev team having done in the last 2 years?

We are working very dedicated to automate everything, and don't repeat manual steps. This includes having our environments defined in terraform and using CI/CD to grab the latest commits and build and test from that. Having a strong focus on shortening release cycles and bringing value to our users as soon as we can.

How would you describe the dev team setup in FotoWare?

We have cross-functional teams where Dev works very closely together with product management, DevOps, QA, and UX to make sure that all angles are covered. It also helps to ensure short cycles for the developers to see what they have developed in practice and get important feedback quickly from QA. This also applies to how we work with UX to do recurring refinements. It’s so inspiring to work with the different disciplines, and it means we don’t just sit coding for 6 weeks before handing it over to someone else. We’re agile and work in short sprints to deliver value.

"I find it fascinating to be working so closely with many incredible customers, from industries like police, defense, and other emergency services that contribute to the greater good"

What does it take to be part of the dev team in FotoWare?

You have to be a team player to fit in here. We focus on diversity as a company, and I’m personally a strong believer that we shouldn’t try to fit everyone into the same box because that won’t help us to think outside the box! In development, we have ages ranging from 21 to 60+, with a mix of men and women, and we’re constantly striving to improve the gender balance. As a company, 41% of our employees are women and we’re well above the tech industry average (29%). We also have an international team with 10 different nationalities in our team alone, with 20 nationalities represented across the entire company. It’s a lot of fun working with people from so many different walks of life.

Why is it an exciting time to join the team?

We’re very lucky that we have been able to grow as a company by 200% during a pandemic. We’ve onboarded several new senior personnel, which has been great, and we have a strong foundation for the growth journey we are on.

Regarding the product itself, I find it fascinating to be working so closely with many incredible customers, from industries like police, defense, and other emergency services that contribute to the greater good. Being part of building something that benefits wider society is a really big motivator, and we have strong focus from our new owners to continue building new and advanced tools to help customers like this to increase their performance and simplify their work life. Our technology is at the forefront of many other diverse industries too, like media, retail, and marketing, which are constantly adapting and help to ensure that we keep innovating with what we can deliver.
