New integration with Adobe Creative Suite

FotoWare's new Extension for Adobe CS5 makes it quick and easy for Graphical Designers to search and retrieve pictures and graphics from the FotoWare archive inside the user interface of Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator. Adding pictures and graphics to an InDesign document has never been quicker and easier than this! Finding the correct picture for enhancement in Photoshop, and the corresponding graphic in Illustrator for editing, is just as easy. Just like the FotoWare plug-in for Microsoft Word and PowerPoint that was introduced in Service Release 3, the new Extensions provide access to the FotoWare media bank inside the native application. Users with login can therefore take advantage of FotoWare's powerful search technology and find the desired file without leaving the well-known Adobe user interface.

FotoWare recently released two new tools on its public FotoWeb demo site. The new zoom tool allows users who require greater detail when evaluating images to open the preview screen and, using a flash-based plugin, zoom in and pan the image freely. When zoomed in, an expandable navigation map makes it possible to quickly pick an area to study more closely.

To try out the zoom tool:

  • Go to the FotoWeb demo site (http://fotoweb60.fotoware.com/fotoweb/Grid.fwx)
  • Double-click a thumbnail in the default image archive to open the preview page.

  • Zoom and pan around using the various available tools:
The Slider lets you adjust the zoom level by dragging.
The Magnifying glass can be used to zoom in or out in any part of the image. Press the Ctrl-key to toggle between Zoom in/out.
The Hand tool is used for panning around the image by clicking and dragging.
The Reload button can be used to reload the original preview.
The Navigation map icon (far right) is used for expanding or hiding the navigation map. Move the red frame in the navigation map to zoom in on another area.

New FotoWeb upload tool

The new FotoWeb Upload Tool is a huge improvement over the old multi-file upload functionality in FotoWeb. It allows you to select any number of files to upload using a standard system dialog box and send them all off in a single operation. Even though this kind of multi-file upload has been available in FotoStation for quite some time, we believe that incorporating this module in FotoWeb will make it even more practical for the end-user to upload files directly from the web interface.

To try out the Upload tool:

  • Go to the FotoWeb demo site (http://fotoweb60.fotoware.com/fotoweb/Uploads.fwx) The link here will take you directly to the Upload page.
  • Click on the Upload files button at the top of the screen to trigger the upload module.

  • Finally, click on the large green upload symbol and choose the files you want to upload using the standard file system dialog box. You can select several pictures if you like. When you click OK the upload starts and the files are placed in the upload area on the FotoWeb server.

Note: Both the above tools are still in beta and may therefore produce unexpected results. Please report back to us if you experience such behavior.

FotoWare, a leading manufacturer of software for retrieving and managing the workflow of images and other visual information, supplies solutions through independent partners all over the world and through subsidiaries in Germany and England. Over 80% of the company’s turnover is generated outside Norway. In 2008 the value of FotoWare’s software and services amounted to just over NOK 100 million on a global basis.

Ever since FotoWare set up operations in 1994 the company’s main market has been newspapers and magazines, although in 2008 sales to these target groups were exceeded for the first time by sales to companies and public administrative bodies.

“The world recognises the need for administration and retrieval of valuable information for use by all kinds of organisations. People are realising that this need applies to all types of files, including files with a visual content, and that the need is growing at an explosive rate,” says the company’s CEO Ole Christian Frenning. “Last year more than 50% of our sales were made to small and large companies, marketing departments and municipal and government administration. It is obvious that our strategy has been successful," says a satisfied Mr. Frenning.

This increase has not been at the expense of the company’s traditional customers. Newspapers and magazines are still the largest customer group, and they have been able to satisfy their rationalisation and automation requirements by using FotoWare’s solutions. The company also has a large group of loyal customers who pay for annual maintenance agreements that are designed to provide them with access to a continual stream of new, improved versions.

FotoWare has announced that a new, major upgrade will be released to its customers during the course of this autumn. “We are delighted about our high turnover and our fantastic profits in 2008. FotoWare is a rock solid company that is in a position to make further investments in 2009 in order to capture new market shares. Our excellent financial situation allows us to make bold choices that will enable us achieve further increases in the company's turnover and earnings”, says Mr. Frenning.
